ANTH 425 - Women, Islam and the State An anthropological perspective on the politics of gender in Muslim societies, with an emphasis on the Middle East. The relationship between religion and society, especially the cultural construction of gender hierarchies within the discourses of Islam and the realities of Muslim women’s lives. The articulation of the impact of modern states on gender hierarchies. Prerequisites Prerequisite: 6 hours of anthropology and/or sociology or consent of the instructor.
