Admission


Applicants seeking admission to the Masters program should have an undergraduate degree of high standing (equivalent of a B grade or higher) within the field of Humanities and or Social Sciences and meet the university’s language proficiency exam. 

Course Requirements for the MA degree


The MA program requires the successful completion of 8 courses (24 credit hours).  Four required core courses plus four elective courses.  All students must take MRS/SOC 507 “Introduction to Forced Migration & Refugee Studies”, MRS/IHRL 518 “International Refugee Law”, MRS 500 “Migration and Refugee Movements in the Middle East and North Africa”, and MRS 501 “Migration and Development”.  The four electives can be chosen from a list of electives offered by the program each semester.  However the following three courses are strongly recommended as electives for the MA in Migration and Refugee Studies in the Middle East and North Africa: MRS 503 “Migration and Refugees in International Relations”, MRS 502 “Legal and Administrative Questions on Migration” and SOC/MRS 576 “Methods of Research with Forced Migrants and Refugees”.

MA Thesis and Thesis Proposal


All students must complete a thesis according to university regulations.  Before commencing work on the thesis, the student must present a thesis proposal for approval by three faculty members, one of whom must be on the CMRS Joint Steering Committee.  The thesis proposal should comprise a research question, including a set of hypotheses, the sources of information and an outline of the research method to be used – and should not exceed 2000 words.  The thesis supervisor should approve the proposal before submission to the other two faculty members for their approval.

Time Line


Completion of the Masters Degree in Migration and Refugee Studies will normally take 2 years.
