Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

The Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics develops a level of skill that will enable the student to apply his/her knowledge in industry or teaching and prepares the student for advanced study of mathematics and other fields.

Students may either choose to do a “Bachelor of Science in Mathematics”, or a “Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with a specialization in Statistics and Data Analysis”. Please see the different requirements in the concentration electives.

More information on Mathematics as a professional activity and on career opportunities is available on the department webpage.

Declaration of the Mathematics Major

Students accepted at AUC may either get admitted into their preferred major at the time of admission to the university (declare their major at the gate) or get admitted to the university as undeclared. Students who get admitted into a major will still have the opportunity to change their major later. Students must declare a major before completing 60 credit hours (before achieving a junior standing). Please check the eligibility criteria for declaring the Mathematics major below.

Eligibility Criteria for Mathematics Major Declaration at the Gate

The eligibility criteria for students who wish to apply to declare their major from the gate, with the declaration effective in the fall 2026 semester or the spring 2027 semester, can be accessed through the link below. Admission to the major is based on the program’s student capacity.

Eligibility Criteria for Mathematics Major Declaration from Within

The eligibility criteria for undeclared students (or students switching majors) who wish to apply to declare their major, with the declaration effective in the fall 2026 semester or the spring 2027 semester, can be accessed through the link below. Admission to the major is based on the program’s student capacity.

A total of 130 credits is required for a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Students may be exempted from the  MACT 1121  requirement based on high school certificate and score in mathematics or by passing a placement examination.

Students from most other majors in the School of Science and Engineering can complete the Mathematics major requirements with 15 to 25 additional credits. Contact the department for more details.

Core Curriculum (36 credits)

The science/ lab requirements of the core curriculum electives is satisfied by the collateral requirements of the major.

General Electives (18 credits)

Courses to be chosen in consultation with the advisor, excluding MACT 1111  and MACT 1112 .

Concentration Electives (30 credits)

Please refer to Groups A, B, and C of courses described below.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics:

Students must take 6 credits from Group A and a minimum of 12 credits from Group B. For the remaining 12 credits, students may choose to take courses from Groups B, C or any 3000-, 4000-, 51xx-, 52xx-level courses with high relevance to mathematics, in consultation with the advisor and the approval of the department chair, with the following two conditions:

  • Due to their overlap, only one of the following courses can count toward the electives: MACT 3143 , CENG 3113 , ENGR 3202 , PHYS 3241 .
  • Since Group A overlaps with Groups B and C, the 6 credits from Group A cannot double count with the remaining 24 credits.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with the Specialization in Statistics and Data Analysis:

Students must take all of the following courses:

Group C (Mathematical Sciences Electives)

The following is a list of courses from engineering and the sciences that have the necessary relevant amount of mathematics:
