BIOL 360/3600 - Introduction to Bioinformatics (3 cr.)
Prerequisites BIOL 1011 or BIOL 1012
Description Bioinformatics is the application of computational methods and tools to, retrieve, and analyse large quantities of sequence datasets. The course covers genomic public databases and resources, sequence alignment, protein structure and function prediction, and analysis of microarray gene expression. Concepts of programming for bioinformatics are introduced. The course provides the students with hands-on experience solving practical problems such as characterization of gene interest, identification of differentially expressed genes, prediction of secondary and tertiary structures of proteins, and tracking spatial and temporal dynamics of a virus.
