Music Minor

In order to complete the minor in music, a student will:

  • learn to read music, and acquire fundamental listening and sight-reading skills.
  • learn the basic principles of music theory.
  • study representative great works of music literature and the composers who produced them.
  • make substantial progress in learning to sing or play an instrument.
  • sing in a choir, or play in an instrumental ensemble. They may also present a solo recital, with the permission of their teacher.

This will require that the student complete 18 credit hours of instruction, normally including the following:

  • MUSC 220, Introduction to Music, 3 cr.
  • MUSC 240, Western Music Theory I, 3 cr.
  • MUSC 360, Music in the Western Tradition, 3 cr.
  • At least three semesters of applied private instruction, 1 cr. each = 3 cr.
  • At least three semesters of ensemble, 1 cr. each = 3 cr.
  • Three elective credits, at the 300-level or above, 3 cr.

Independent study courses are only offered to music minors or other students majoring or minoring within the program of the Department of Performing and Visual Arts.
