APLN 5314  -  Second Language Writing: Theory and Practice (3 cr.)



Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview of current research and practices in the field of second language writing. The first part of the course focuses on basic issues concerning theoretical frameworks and approaches in the context of writing instruction. Then, the second section taps into a wide range of topics related to L2 writing and writers, including: effects of culture and L1 background, ownership, voice and identity, feedback in writing classes, writing features across various proficiency levels, and writing assessment. The final part delves into issues of writing teacher education and directing a language program. The course should be of interest to those interested in pursuing a career either as a writing researcher, instructor, or writing program administrator. Students in this class will be involved in a wide range of activities and also in collecting and analysing classroom writing data.

The main objective of this course is to provide students with main concepts in the field of second language writing. The course employs a number of teaching methods including lecturing, classroom discussions, and hands-on experiences. Students have to participate in class discussions and read assigned materials before coming to class. Students are also required to complete a number of assignments in this course.
