PHIL 258/2117 - Political Philosophy (3 cr.)
Description This course is an introduction to the history of political philosophy and addresses dominant issues central to political thinking in the Western tradition. Themes may include the question of justice, the exercise of power, the meaning of democracy, the freedom and rights of the individual, the circumstances of revolution, the roots of authority, and the role of violence. Course readings are drawn from figures such as Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Mill, Kant, Hegel, Nietzche, and Marx.
