CEFA 040 - Failure of Mechanical Components: Analysis Prevention

Description/Outline The objective of this course is to introduce engineers to the techniques of identifying failure modes of engineering materials, sources of failure in engineering components, methods of failure prevention, and non-destructive testing techniques. Industrial examples of historical failure cases will be emphasized throughout the course.

Course Outline

  • Failure Modes of Engineering Materials: Ductile and Brittle Fracture, Fatigue,Failure, Creep, Stress, Rupture, Thermal Fatigue, Corrosion, and Wear
  • Failure Analysis of Engineering Components: Failure of Castings, Forging, and Heat Treated Components; Failure of Welded Joints; Failure of Shaft Bearings, Gears, and Dyes; Failure of Pressure Vessels
  • Prevention of Failure and Testing Techniques: Techniques of Failure Analysis • Quality Control and Non Destructive Testingv
  • Case Studies (selected according to the interest of the participants)
