 The following are the tuition rates for 12 credit hours per semester for the academic year 2014/2015:


I. Egyptian students and non-Egyptian students who are permanently resident in Egypt.


a. Egyptian rate for New students: LE 30,713 and $ 4,389
b. Egyptian rate for Returning students: LE 29,923 and $ 4,276


Tuition at AUC is expressed 50 percent in Egyptian pounds and 50 percent in US dollars. The total amount of the tuition may be paid in either currency or in both. Tuition rates are subject to an annual increase. The US dollar portion may be paid in Egyptian pounds according to the Central Bank of Egypt’s prevailing rate at the day of payment.


II. Non-Egyptian, nonresident students:


a. International rate for New Students: $ 12,965
b. International rate for Returning Students: $ 12,632

Additional charges are added for additional credits.

Tuition and fees are collected by semester. No student with bills outstanding, including charges for breakage or library fines, will be admitted to any examination, given any certificate or report of academic standing, or be permitted to register for a subsequent semester.
 

FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS

The American University in Cairo offers a variety of financial aid awards including need-based and non-need based scholarships that assist students in financing their education at AUC. These awards include; achievement scholarship, sports scholarship, cultural scholarship, financial aid and others.

Academic Achievement Scholarship

Up to 25 percent of new Egyptian and non-Egyptian students are awarded the achievement scholarship. Selection is based upon secondary school academic performance or equivalent exams. Institutional Financial Aid

The financial aid program at the American University in Cairo is designed to provide financial assistance in the form of a grant to degree seeking undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. This financial aid provides awards to cover partial tuition fees. Approximately forty five percent of undergraduate students have received financial assistance in recent years.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the institutional financial aid program, undergraduate students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as full-time, degree seeking student.
  • Demonstrate financial need by submitting a financial aid application form attached with all supporting documents prior to the deadlines for applying.
  • Returning students should not be on academic probation.

Selection and Awards

The financial aid applications are submitted to the financial aid committee for consideration. Financial aid grants will be determined according to student or family financial resources, as appropriate, within university budget. Financial need is defined as the difference between the costs of attending the American University in Cairo and the amount a student or family can contribute toward those costs. The financial aid awards may include grants and part-time student work.

Renewal

AUC will provide financial aid to continuing recipients who remain eligible and continue to demonstrate financial need. Undergraduate students who receive temporary awards must reapply if they wish to renew their awards. Students are responsible for reporting changes in their family’s financial resources. A student’s award may increase, decrease, or remain the same from year to year, depending on university costs, the family’s current financial ability, and university budget. Students on probation are not eligible to receive their financial aid awards.

No financial aid is awarded for winter or summer sessions.

Deferred Payment

  • When a student is unable to pay the entire amount due at the time of registration, the Director of scholarships in the office of Student Financial Affairs and Scholarships may approve payment in two installments as mentioned below.
  • Students applying for deferred payment should pick up the forms from the Student Service Center.
  • Forms should be submitted to Student Service Center when filled out.

For continuing students:

  • 50 percent of the tuition must be paid at the time of registration.
  • The balance must be paid by November 20 for the fall semester, April 7 for the spring semester, and July 15 for the summer semester.
  • Tuition may be paid in three installments at the request of the student.


For new students:

  • 70 percent of the tuition must be paid at the time of registration.
  • The balance must be paid by November 20 for the fall semester and April 7 for the spring semester.


For PhD students:

  • Tuition may be paid in three installments at the request of the student.
  • There is no deferment of payment for winter session.

Tuition Fee for Readmission (Admissions)

1. Disqualified cases: students who were disqualified and readmitted will be required to pay the full tuition fee prevailing at the time of readmission.
2. Readmission after one semester of withdrawal: no change in tuition level, same as prior to withdrawal.
3. Readmission cases for students who withdrew for more than one semester: students will pay according to the tuition level of their cumulative GPA at the time of readmission.

Transfer of Funds to Subsequent Semesters:

School of Continuing Education


For regular courses offered by the School of Continuing Education, the Management Center, and Engineering and Science Services, schedules of fees are included in separate announcements. Fees for other educational and training programs are based on separate contractual arrangements. Most programs have differential fees for Egyptian and non-Egyptian participants.

SCHOLARSHIPS

AUC offers scholarships based on merit and need. Generally, scholarships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic or artistic talent. The types of scholarships are:

1. Academic Achievement Scholarship

Awarded up to the top 25 percent of new Egyptian and non-Egyptian students for a one-year period. Selection is based upon secondary school academic performance or equivalent exams. 2. Innovation, Cultural and Leadership Scholarship

The Innovation, Cultural and Leadership Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded each year to a limited number of new students who participated in cultural activities.


Eligibility

The Innovation, Cultural and Leadership Scholarship is awarded each year to a limited number of new students who participated in cultural activities – which include but are not limited to music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing or writing – organized by local official government bodies and in which they have achieved a high level of distinction. Applicants will be interviewed by the Office of Student Development and their activities will be evaluated by a committee to determine eligibility and selection.


Terms of the Award

  1. This scholarship gives the student a reduction of 15 percent of the full tuition fee per semester for that academic year provided that the student is not awarded a full scholarship.
  2. This scholarship is a one-year award. For subsequent years, the student will be eligible for the scholarship if he or she participates in one of the different programs organized by the Office of Student Development.
  3. This scholarship will be cancelled if the student registers for a number of credit hours that are less than full time course load. In other words, he or she should maintain full-time status in order to retain the scholarship.
  4. This scholarship will be cancelled if the student is on social or academic probation.
  5. To retain the scholarship, the student has to maintain a grade point average of not less than 2.0.

Deadlines

Fall semester: Those who apply on/before first of March will receive the Cultural Scholarship results before the end of the fall semester.
Spring semester: Those who apply on/before mid-October will receive the Cultural Scholarship results before the end of the spring semester.

N.B.: Those who apply after the above-mentioned deadlines will receive the results the following semester.

3. Cultural Merit Scholarship

Students who represent the University in cultural activities organized by the Office of Student Development may be granted a cash award.

Eligibility

  • Recipients must be qualified and are active participants in the Office of Student Development’s cultural programs.
  • Students should maintain a grade point average of not less than 2.5.

Award

The amount of the award is determined based on several criteria including: commitment, discipline, attitude, participation in on and off-campus events, team spirit and talent.

4. Egyptian Public Schools Scholarships

Twenty annual full-tuition scholarships are awarded to Egyptian students who graduated from public schools. These students must have an outstanding secondary school academic record and must demonstrate financial need for the scholarship. Selected students must meet admission requirements.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should be Egyptian students graduating from public schools (not including language schools).
  • They should have an outstanding secondary school academic record.
  • They should demonstrate financial need for the scholarship.
  • They should meet AUC admission requirements.

Maintainability

Selected students will maintain their scholarship until graduation as long as they are making satisfactory progress toward their degrees and maintain a grade point average of not less than 3.0.


Public School Scholarship for 2014- 2015

The conditions for the public school scholarship offered by The American University in Cairo for the academic year 2014 - 2015 are as follows:

  1. Egyptian students with thanawiya amma certificates from public schools in the Arab Republic of Egypt (not including language schools, whether governmental or private or experimental) for the academic year 2013 - 2014
  2. Minimum acceptance score is 98 percent for the science section and 97 percent for the arts section
  3. Students must pass either the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum band score of 5.5 and writing score of 5.5 or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum total score of 62 and writing score of 17.

N.B.: Tests must be completed no more than two years prior to the first day of the term for which applicants are applying.

4. Students must submit the official results of the English test with the official result of the thanawiya amma to the Egyptian Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs Office, 3 Safeya Zaghloul Street, Cairo, on the day following the announcement of the official thanawyia amma results.                                                                                                                                                          

N.B.: Students who do not complete the required documents will be permanently disqualified from the scholarship.

5. Empower Scholarship

The AUC-funded Empower Scholarship offers five full and/or partial annual scholarships to thanawiya amma graduates from five governorates in Upper Egypt: Assiut, Beni Suef, Menya, Sohag and Fayyoum. Selection is based on high academic achievement and demonstrated extra-curricular activities.

6. Honor Scholarship

Honor scholarships are granted to students who achieve excellent secondary academic records.


Eligibility

To attract the best high-school students in the region, an honor scholarship is awarded at the beginning of each academic year to the new students achieving the highest scores at the national or regional level in their respective high school diplomas (thanawiya amma, IGCSE, French baccalaureate, German abitur, IB diploma and American diploma); a maximum of five such scholarships are awarded every year. The scholarship amounts to a 40 percent additional reduction to full AUC tuition per semester (fall, spring, summer and winter) over and above the regular achievement scholarship.

Maintainability

The honor scholarship is a one-year award that is re-evaluated annually, after summer semester exam results are issued. Recipients of the scholarship will retain the scholarship as long as they maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of not less than 3.4 and full-time status (24 credit hours). Students who take remedial English courses (i.e. ELI and/or English 100) during the fall and /or spring semesters of the previous academic year will retain their honor scholarship.

If a student’s cumulative GPA falls below 3.4 or if the student does not maintain a full-time status, he or she loses the scholarship. Unlike achievement scholarships, honor scholarships cannot be regained.

7. Middle East Partnership Initiative- Tomorrow’s Leaders

The Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship was initiated and co-funded by the US State Department’s Middle East Partnership Initiative. The fully-funded program provides opportunities to deserving students from the MENA region, who excel academically and display the potential to become future leaders in the region.

8. Named Scholarships

Named scholarships are awards funded by individual donors or corporations. Selection is based on the donor’s criteria.

The awards cover a partial amount of tuition fees.

9. Sports Achievement Scholarship

The Sports Achievement Scholarship is awarded to a limited number of students who participate in sports that are listed in the Egyptian Championship tournament with a high level of distinction in their final secondary school year.

 

Eligibility and Selection

  • The Sports Achievement Scholarship is awarded to a limited number of students who participate in sports including, but not limited to, basketball, swimming, judo, rowing, tennis, handball and squash.
  • School competitions are not accepted.
  • Documents proving sports achievement levels will be examined by the Office of Athletics and the applicant’s activities will be evaluated by a committee.
  • The Sports Achievement Scholarship gives the student a reduction of 15 percent of the full tuition fee per semester for that academic year provided that the student is not awarded a full scholarship.

  • Students may also qualify for the Sports Achievement Scholarship if they have one of the above-mentioned junior championships (less than 18 years), provided that the championship was held during the year before.
  • Worthy cases that do not conform to the above-mentioned guidelines will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Students who joined the University with no Sports Achievement Scholarship but subsequently realized a position in the annual National Universities Tournament (Shahid El Refaii) as per the above table may submit the certificates obtained from the Egyptian University Sports Federation to the Office of Student Financial Affairs and Scholarships and be granted the scholarship the following fall semester.
  • Tennis: The scholarship is awarded to students ranked from 1 to 10 according to the Egyptian Tennis Federation Ranking.

 

Maintainability

  • To maintain the Sports Achievement Scholarship, an eligible student has to maintain a grade point average of not less than 2.0.
  • The Sports Achievement Scholarship is a one-year award. For subsequent year(s),a student will only be eligible for the scholarship if he or she continues to participate in the National Universities Championship.
  • The Sports Achievement Scholarship will be cancelled if the awarded student is on social or academic probation.
  • Students on the Sports Achievement Scholarship should maintain full-time status in order to keep the scholarship.

Required Documents

An official letter issued by the federation of the game is required. This letter must be endorsed by the concerned sports union, the Supreme Council of Youth and Sports, and the Olympic Committee.

Potential Additional 15 Percent Scholarship Award Criteria

Additional funds through the Sports Achievement Scholarship program are available for students who place in the top five at recognized world championships in selected sports. These awards (up to an additional 15 percent, for a total of a 30 percent scholarship award) are reviewed and awarded on a yearly basis. Evidence of continued success on the international level is required to renew the additional portion of the scholarship.

Students who do not continue to perform on this exceptional level of international competition may continue to earn the regular Sports Achievement Award (15 percent) by meeting the criteria for that scholarship.

The director of the Office of Athletics or his or her designee will review all materials submitted to qualify for this additional portion of the scholarship. Official communication certifying the place of finish in international events must come from the international organization sponsoring the competition and/or the Olympic committee of the applicant’s home country.

To qualify for this award, the sport must be one that is competitive on a wide world stage, not just in a specific country or region. The competitions further must be a single championship event, not one of a series or multiple events billed as world championships but which have limited attendance and/or recognition from the world sporting community. For example, the sports of badminton or judo would qualify for consideration for this award, but speedball would not. Results for individual sports will be given preference over team sports unless proof of significant contribution to team results is provided through detailed statistics from the competitions.

10. Sports Merit Scholarship

Students not awarded the sports achievement scholarship at admission, but who represent AUC in the annual National Universities Sports Championship and achieved high ranks, may be granted a cash award.

 

Eligibility

  • The student should represent the University in the National Universities Sports Championship.
  • The student should achieve a rank of not less than the third (i.e. bronze medal).
  • The student should maintain a GPA of not less than 2.5 in the year of granting the award.


N.B. Students who receive the Sports Achievement Scholarship could also be granted the Sports Merit Scholarship if they achieved high ranks in the sports they participate in and meet the Sports Merit Award requirements.


Awards

The amount of the award is determined based on several criteria including: commitment, discipline, attitude, participation in on and off-campus events, team spirit and talent.

Work Study Program

  • The Office of Student Financial Affairs and Scholarships, in collaboration with Career Services, provides students with the opportunity to gain on-campus work experience and develop skills while earning some money through the Work-study program. The work-study program gives students the opportunity to work in various departments on campus during the academic year and contribute to projects and programs within AUC’s academic and administrative departments.
  • It allows students to contribute towards their education expenses, make use of their free time, gain experience, develop transferable skills, boost their resumes and earn extra money.
  • The type of work a student is required to accomplish may differ from one department to another according to the duties performed by each department.
  • Students participating in the program should be willing to dedicate 8-10 working hours per week with a maximum of 120 hours during the regular semester, 60 hours during the summer session and 30 hours during the winter session.
  • The student is compensated at the end of each semester.

Work-Study Program for 2014-2015

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate, enrolled, full-time students in their sophomore year or above, with a grade point average of not less than 2.5.
  • All enrolled graduate students
  • Both Egyptian as well as non-Egyptian students
  • Each department should not exceed the number of 30 full time work-study students per semester.

Compensation

  • Undergraduate student is paid an hourly rate of LE 30.
  • Graduate students are proportionally compensated at the rate of 15 percent (maximum) deduction in tuition fees for one academic course per 40 working hours, two academic courses per 80 working hours or three academic courses per 120 working hours.
  • Compensation will be either credited to the student’s account or given to him/her in cash upon request.

  • Students should prepare their resumes and upload them to CareerWeb. For assistance on preparing a resume, please refer to http://www.caps.aucegypt.edu/services/resume/resume_writing.html 
  • Research and apply to available work-study opportunities at Career Web under the Jobs/Internships section.
  • Once departments send the details of selected students to the Career Center, within two to five business days, log into Career Web to complete the work-study commitment form.
  • Complete the work-study evaluation form on Career Web upon completion of the program.
  • The form must be printed, signed and stamped from your work-study department.
  • Students should submit the evaluation form to Mostafa Takroury at the Office of Student Financial Affairs and Scholarships (OSFAS), room 2012, Dr. Hamza Alkholi Information center before the deadline.
  • Ensure that your supervisor completes the department work-study evaluation form by the last day of the exam period of each semester.

N.B. If the form is not submitted to OSFAS, students will not be reimbursed at the end of the work-study duration.

Other Financial Assistance and Awards for Non-Egyptian Students

Study Abroad Students from U.S. State Universities

A partial tuition waiver is available to students currently enrolled full-time in their first undergraduate degree program at a U.S. four-year state university. The waiver assumes that the out-of-state (non-resident) tuition rate is lower than AUC’s tuition. The waiver equals the difference between the two tuition rates. AUC must receive an official letter from the state university bursar or other responsible officer confirming that college’s out-of-state tuition rate for the same period the student will be attending AUC. The waiver of the tuition difference is applicable only to undergraduate study abroad and ALIN program students for a maximum of two semesters. It does not apply to the summer session; to study in the Arabic Language Institute’s intensive Arabic program; to part-time study; or to study towards an AUC degree. Students should contact AUC’s New York Office for dtails (e-mail:aucegypt@aucnyo.edu).

AFS, EIL, and YFU Scholarships

The American University in Cairo offers two scholarships annually to alumni of each of the following programs: American Field Service; Experiment in International Living; and Youth for Understanding. Alumni of these programs must be non-Egyptian and seek their undergraduate degree from AUC. The award is a tuition credit equivalent to $1,000 per year and will be awarded based on the individual’s academic merit and financial need. Students must file the Financial Aid Profile of the College Scholarship Service (Box 6376, Princeton, New Jersey 08541, U.S.A.) and AUC’s financial aid form immediately after admission. The scholarship is renewable based on academic performance and financial need.

Outside Assistance for American Students

Other than the opportunities described above, American students may be able to obtain outside support for work at AUC from the following sources:
  1. Rotary Foundation International Scholarships for one year of undergraduate, or language study. Contact: student’s local Rotary Club or Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, 1 Rotary Center, 1560 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, Illinois 60201. www.rotary.org
  2. Veterans Administration educational benefits are applicable to undergraduate degree study at AUC. U.S. veterans should contact their regional office of the Veterans Administration. Written approval of benefits from the Veterans Administration should be obtained prior to coming to Cairo. www.va.gov
  3. Federal Stafford Loans can be used by U.S. citizens or permanent residents for undergraduate degree study or to earn a certificate in Arabic language (at least one year of intensive study). Pell Grants are not applicable. Degree and certificate students must obtain instructions from the AUC New York Office (e-mail:aucegypt@aucnyo.edu). Study abroad students may apply to their home university’s financial aid office for campus-based aid and/or student loans to be used while they are enrolled at AUC
  4. Gilman Scholarships U.S. undergraduates can receive financial support for study abroad programs worldwide through the new Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program of the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program is named after Congressman Ben Gilman (R-NY), the sponsor of legislation that sets aside $ 1.5 million to broaden and increase opportunities for study abroad by undergraduate students who face financial constraints. The Institute of International Education (IIE), a New York-based non-profit organization, will administer the program through its Southern Regional Office in Houston, Texas under a grant from the Bureau.

Established under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2002, Gilman International Scholarships will provide up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit.
